Why you need a content strategy

When you’re creating content, you NEED a plan. And that’s just what a content strategy gives you: a plan.

It’s the difference between going to the grocery store with no list, three kids, a 40 minute deadline, and no food in the fridge and only the staples no one really wants to consume in the pantry. I’m looking at you plain rice. You’re setting yourself up for disaster. And you know it, but you don’t know what else to do.

But when you’re strategic, you go to the store with your 40 minute deadline, 3 kids, a list of groceries that make actual meals, and in the order you’ll find your items in the store. You have your coupons ready to go too. Everything is laid out and easy for you to execute.

Everything is strategic and meant to save time and money, and make sure you don’t have a lot of wasted energy. Or worse yet, pay for food you don’t really need. And you’ll actually use what you buy because you have your meals planned out. You have a plan.

A content strategy gives you a plan, so you don’t waste time trying to figure out what to create. You don’t waste money trying to buy products or ads you don’t need yet, only to realize you aren’t creating the right content. Everything you do has a purpose.

A content strategy helps you be more efficient, productive, and financially successful in your online business. Here are the 10 steps to follow for a successful content strategy plan.

10 key factors to give your content strategy the oomph it needs:

1. Quality Content Creation

Don’t serve up bland stuff. Your content should be so good that readers can’t resist. Like so good, they flock to you like a kid to a candy wrapper. I mean seriously, how do they know the minute we open a snack? Just over here covertly hiding my snickers bars in a broccoli bag in the freezer.

To make that non-bland content, check out some copywriting frameworks. And while you’re at it, make sure you understand the difference between content writing and copywriting. It’s a no-nonsense guide and a quick read. But so worth your time.

2. Branding and Graphics

Content isn’t just about words; it’s about looking good too. Get your brand swagger on by making sure your graphics are pro-level. Your content should scream your style. Need help? We’ve got your back with a branding audit guide (coming soon).

3. Powerful Hooks and Headlines

Your headlines and hooks are the pick-up lines of your content.

4. Consistency or Frequency in Content Creation

Imagine you’re a TV show. People love consistency. Create a content calendar and stick to it like your favorite series.

Want more on this? I’m brewing up a blog post on the importance of consistency, and what consistency and frequency actually mean. So stay tuned. Better yet, bookmark this post, so you can come back to it as I update it. You’ll be surprised what they mean. The “gurus” are lying to you!

5. Content Variety

Spice it up! Don’t just stick to one dish. Serve a buffet of content – blog posts, videos, infographics, podcasts; you name it. It’s all about keeping things fresh. So pick what you enjoy as a consumer. You’ll understand how to create it better. And you’ll genuinely like creating content that you already consume yourself. So no burnout!

And content variety isn’t just about the platform you create for or the type of content. It’s also about having variety in your topics. That’s where content pillars and a content matrix come in.

6. Market Research

Know your audience better than they know themselves. Dive into their world, understand their pain points, and create content that’s a perfect fit for them. It’s all about understanding your ideal buyers’ journey.

7. Realistic Business Goals

Don’t create content just because. Set business goals that are realistic. Then create content that’s aligned with your business goals and your paid offers. We want money in the bank, not just a high follower count.

Content creation is how you prime your audience to buy. You give them a little taste of what your paid offers are all about. Talking about the same topics over and over. With a little variety of course! Then keep tabs on your progress with a simple goals sheet (coming soon).

8. Search Engine Optimization

Make friends with search engine optimization. Dive deep into the Ultimate SEO Guide and become besties with search engines to boost your online visibility. Because you don’t want to create content that no one ever sees. That’s a waste of time, energy, and money.

9. Distribution Strategy and Plan

Creating content is just the start; now you need a plan to send it out into the world. Read up on our blog post to craft your rock-solid distribution strategy.

Creating content isn’t the most important aspect of your content strategy. You also need a way to distribute that content. And content distribution needs to be just as strategic. Always have a purpose.

10. Metrics to Measure and Grow

You can’t manage what you can’t measure. Track your website traffic, engagement, conversion rates, and more with a metrics document (coming soon) to ensure your strategy is on point.

Measuring your metrics is the best way to see what you ideal buyers actually want. They’ll tell you through their actions. Just follow the data.
